Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is self-hypnosis for labour and childbirth. Hypnobirthing is a tried and tested method that prepares a woman in giving birth in a peaceful and relaxed way, often without the need for medical intervention.

Hypnobirths are usually shorter than those labours with mothers who have not learned the techniques.
What will the hypnobirthing course cover?

The hypnobirthing classes will look at the psychological, as well as the physical, well-being of the mother, her birth partner and the baby.

The course is built around various hypnobirthing techniques, which include hypnobirthing relaxation, visualisation and special breathing techniques (up breathing/down breathing) as well us understanding the physiological changes that happen in labour and birth. By the end of the course, you will know all the available options that labour may present, you will have considered your birth preferences and will be ready for a calm and confident birth.

All aspects of birth are covered, as well as the different options that are presented to parents in labour.

Magical Baby Moments teaches the KG Hypnobirthing method. The teacher training course that Magical Baby Moments was taught is accredited by the Royal College of Midwives. The KG Hypnobirthing method is an all-round antenatal preparation course that gives you and your birth partner everything that you need to know, in order to prepare for birth with confidence.

Can anyone do hypnobirthing?

Yes, absolutely! If you have the right mindset and believe in the principle of hypnobirthing, there is no reason not to benefit from hypnobirthing and have a natural birth. Hypnobirthing courses are for the dads and/or birthing partners too. They need to be just as prepared.
Is it only for first-time mums?

Absolutely not - anyone can do hypnobirthing.

Mothers who had a bad previous experience can definitely benefit from hypnobirthing and use the techniques to have the birth they want for themselves and their baby. Even mothers who have previously had a Cesarean section, and have been given the 'all-clear' to have a vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC), will find hypnobirthing an empowering experience.

Knowing and practicing hypnobirthing techniques can also help those mums who have planned induced labours and c-sections. Hypnobirthing is about preparing the mother for a calm pregnancy and a relaxed labour - whichever path that it takes.
Does hypnobirthing guarantee a completely pain-free labour and birth?

No. There are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control.

Also, like any childbirth preparation class, the success of the techniques is related to the amount of practice you put in.

Approximately 5-10% low-risk births fall into 'special circumstances', where medical intervention is required.

The aim of hypnobirthing is not a completely pain-free and picture-perfect 'natural' birth (although that is possible), but instead to have a calmer, easier, more comfortable natural birth, where you are in control and where you have been given informed choice.
Will hypnobirthing help me if I need to have an induction or Caesarean birth?

In some instances, medical intervention is required for the safety of the mother and her baby. Hypnobirthing can help you stay in a calm and positive state of mind and help you be better prepared for any change in circumstances. Hypnobirthing mums say that the techniques really helped - even if they were induced, had an assisted birth or ended up with a Cesarean.

In fact, the principles of hypnobirthing will no doubt help you in other experiences outside of labour.
How many weeks pregnant should you be to do the course?

The earlier you start, the longer you have to practise the techniques of hypnobirthing. Ideally we say anytime from 20 weeks.
If you are more than 36 weeks pregnant and don't have time to attend the full course, I can offer one-to-one intensive courses with you and your birth companion. Please email me for more information.
How long does it take to do the hypnobirthing course?

This depends on which course you opt for:
  • Group Hypnobirthing Programme evenings - usually starts on the first Tuesday of each month | 4-week programme
  • Group Hypnobirthing Programme weekends – Saturday and Sunday, see upcoming date on our Classes page
  • One-to-One Hypnobirthing Programme - at a mutually convenient time (approximately 10 hours of teaching time)
  • Share with a Friend - at a mutually convenient time (approximately 10 hours of teaching time)
  • Hypnobirthing Refresher - at a mutually convenient time (approximately 3 hours of teaching time)
Where do the courses take place?

Group hypnobirthing classes take place in two locations in Essex: in Romford and Upminster. The private hypnobirthing courses tend to run in the couple’s home.
Can my birthing partner attend the hypnobirthing classes with me?

Absolutely, and at no extra cost. Hypnobirthing is for dads and/or birth partners just as much as for the mum.

Though a lot of fathers will be reluctant to join - thinking that hypnobirthing will be conducted by a tree-hugging hippy - I promise you (and him) that it won’t be the case. Many fathers surprise themselves at how quickly their perceptions change.

He will be an advocate of this course very quickly, I promise!
How much does the hypnobirthing course cost?

Prices for hypnobirthing courses vary, depending on what you choose. Please visit the Classes page for details.

When you start the class you will be given the parents notes and hypnobirthing aids and the Katharine Graves book, The Hypnobirthing Book and Colour and Calmness Relaxation tracks.
